The 190-hour Costa Rica TEFL class is a full-time, very intensive class. The course is divided into twelve chapters and a final project. Our energetic instructors cover all of this material and much more during class. We pride ourselves on providing our trainees with an excellent grasp of important grammar rules, a variety of teaching techniques, and a solid database of proven activities to use in your future classroom.
The following topics will be covered in the text and throughout the 4-week course.
1 - We will explore the Role of the Teacher, reading and completing tasks on the various contexts in which teaching occurs, the traits of an effective teacher, ways to build community and be a good role model in your classroom, strategies for maintaining professional relationships during your teaching career, and effective teaching practices and classroom management. TEFL terminology and abbreviations used in the profession will also be defined.
2 - We will define a Student-Centered Classroom, clarifying the teacher’s role in a student-centered approach to learning. The importance of collaboration and cooperative learning, the Learning Pyramid, the VARK learning preferences, and the Multiple Intelligences will also be discussed.
3 - Cultural Sensitivity and the implications for the EFL classroom will be discussed, as well as culture shock.
4 - The differences between Methods and Approaches will be clarified, as we compare contemporary and traditional teaching method including the communicative language teaching, Total Physical Response, content-based instruction, task-based learning, and differentiation.
5 - You will learn how to properly Lesson Plan and Assess your English classes. You will gain a good grasp on the importance of lesson planning, how it relates to instruction, and the characteristics of an effective lesson plan. We will also look at effective assessment methods, formats and question types, and the most appropriate type of assessment for all four language skills.
6 - Throughout the course, we will spend a considerable about of time looking at Grammar and Lexis. We will define word roots, prefixes and suffixes, categorize words into parts of speech, and select vocabulary words to teach in the ESL/EFL classroom. You will learn effective methods of vocabulary instruction, challenges to teaching idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs, sentence types, tenses and aspects. We will share effective methods of grammar instruction as well as methods for assessing vocabulary and grammar.
7 - We will take a close look at how the brain processes input while Listening and Reading. We will share types of listening and reading materials, how to choose them for the classroom, how to tailor listening and reading activities to effectively meet your students' needs, and strategies to help your students improve their listening and reading skills. Likewise, we will spend time with Speaking and Writing activities and strategies for improving students' skills, including pronunciation.
8 - Incorporating Visual Aids and Technology in the EFL/ESL classroom has several benefits which we will explore. We will discuss how low-tech visual aids can be applied in the classroom, ways to effectively use the Internet to enhance students’ communication skills, and recommendations for integrating video and song into an English class.
9 - We will look at the basic concepts and best practices of Designing a Course of study for an ESL/EFL class through creating, delivering, and analyzing needs and diagnostic assessments. We will also discuss the selection of appropriate textbooks for your students and creating a course contract and syllabus.
