TEFL Training In Costa Rica | Updated: 03/06/2023

Can I take the TEFL Course in Costa Rica with my Partner or Friend?

Written by International TEFL Academy Costa Rica

Yes, you can!  We've had may couples and pairs of friends take our 4-week TEFL course in Costa Rica together over the years.  They were looking for an adventure that they could embark on together. They shared memories that will last a lifetime.

"Taking the time to do something different away from home gave us a lot of clarity and made our relationship stronger."

-Katie, Nov. '15  (Read Katie and Alisdair's blog)

Most of our pairs had taken short trips together before coming to Costa Rica, but their friends and families felt more comfortable sending them abroad knowing that they would be together.  Likewise, the decision to quit jobs, leave the familiarity of home and to immerse in a new culture was less intimidating for the pairs as they had each other for support.

" Our relationship has been strengthened through the necessity to communicate through all of the changes, as well as learning to trust one another in new and different ways."

-Angela, June '16

Before starting this journey together, we recommend discussing your goals.  Why do you want to live abroad?  What do you want to learn and experience?  Are you going to learn Spanish?  Where do you ultimately end up?  Are you hoping to work together or at different schools?  What's your timeline?  Are you open to changes in the plan?  Make sure you are on the same page!

"Support each other but don't be afraid to spend time with other people in the course without your partner/friend.”

-Katie, Nov. '15

If you have children together, we ask you to seriously consider your decision to move the whole family abroad.  Make sure you have a plan:  health insurance, schooling, childcare etc. can all be a bit more complicated while living in a different country, especially if you don't speak Spanish. For instance, in the US, all schools have services to help students that don't speak English, however, public schools in Costa Rica do not have services for students who do not speak Spanish. To find that, your child needs to enroll in a private school, which will be costly.  Although it does require some research and planning, this will be an amazing experience for you and your family.

"Be patient, flexible and willing to compromise. Traveling with anyone for a long period of time can be strenuous
on any relationship. You have to be very patient and willing to compromise on everything. If not, you could find
yourself arguing about where to eat, how you want to occupy your free time, what you want to see, who you
want to hang around, etc."

Regarding your housing options during the course, we have homestay families that accommodate couples and families that are able to take two people with separate rooms.  Additionally, we can help you set up an apartment for the month if you are not comfortable finding a place on your own.

"There have been ups and there have been downs, but we have always come back stronger and more aware of each other. It's a beautiful way to get to know someone even deeper, and to watch them grow. Our communication level is stronger than ever, and we're definitely still learning how to be better. It's so much fun to share this experience with another person. You always have a person who is there to listen, gossip, share housing/accommodations, food, bills, etc. I'd say if you're considering taking the TEFL course with someone, you should. Life is short, and you never know what will happen in the future."
