Three Reasons Why All Expats Should Get TEFL Certified

Written by International TEFL Academy Costa Rica

Regardless of which country you currently call home, getting TEFL certified is something you should definitely consider. Expats range greatly in age, residual income, savings, and reasons for living abroad. Getting TEFL certified offers great opportunities and experiences for all.

It's a great way to meet other expats!

It doesn't matter if you've been living abroad for ten years or are fresh off the plane, meeting other world travelers is always one of the highlights of taking the plunge. Getting TEFL certified means you'll be taking a month-long course with 8-10 other expats, where you'll share amazing experiences together and most likely build a friendship bond with many of them. You'll also get to meet lots of expat teachers and locals that will serve as your student.

In other words, getting TEFL certified is a social event with lots of gatherings, laughter and challenges. If you've been living abroad for a long time, than you'll want to spice things up. If you've just arrived than you're probably dying to meet new people and don't know where to start. There is a big difference between meeting travelers in a hostel that are staying for a few days and meeting other people that are also intending to stay for a long period in the country you now call home.

It allows you to get out of your routine!

If you've been living abroad for a long time, or have decided to live your retirement years abroad, then you probably made this decision to spice things up in your life. Problem is, if you've been living abroad for multiple years now, you've probably found yourself in a new routine. Time to break that routine and challenge yourself to get TEFL certified regardless of wanting to get a job at the end.

Retired expats that get TEFL certified have shared their experiences with us and have said that they can't believe how much they've learned about a language that they've spoken their entire lives. Some expats decide to take their new-found knowledge and apply it by volunteering and helping tutor locals or teach part-time to add a little excitement to their routine.

It's the ultimate insurance plan

If you're an expat, then you've already packed up and left on a whim. Who's to say you won't do it again? A TEFL certification is one of the only ways that you guarantee yourself a good chance of getting a job regardless of which country you move to. Even if you are currently not teaching English, who is to say that you may not find yourself needing a job in the future, and having a TEFL certificate in your back pocket should bring some peace to your heart.

It's also a great way to add additional income if you already have a job. Picking up a night class, subbing or a weekend class can make a big difference when it comes to trying to save money or travel back home for a visit.
