Top 10 Food & Drink Recommendations

Written by International TEFL Academy Costa Rica

The following are our top ten food and drink recommendations for your time in Costa Rica.  Don’t skip a single one, please!

10) Pejibaye- A strange fruit that tastes more like a vegetable.  Usually found steamed in supermarkets. Delicious with mayonnaise.

9)  Pipas- Basically a coconut cut in half allowing you to drink the water inside. One of these in your hand, and you are officially in the tropics.

8) Enyucados – A fried potato-ish vegetable (yuca) usually stuffed with cheese, beef or chicken.

7) Gallo Pinto- Rice and beans served for breakfast. This is the pride of Costa Ricans and they rarely go two days without eating it. Very good with sour cream and hot sauce.

6) Chifrijo- Difficult to describe, easy to eat. A soup-ish dish with pork, beans, tomatoes, avocado and cilantro.

5) Batidos (smoothies)- Yes we have smoothies back home, but they simply taste better down here!

4) Tres Leches-  Highly addictive dessert which is basically cake with the milk added, rather than in a glass.

3) Patti – A Caribbean pastry stuffed with ground beef or chicken. Just a little spicy but oh, so good.

2) Chicharrones- Deep fried pork ribs. Great with beer.

AND…

1) Ceviche- fresh raw fish marinated in citrus juices, such as lemon or lime, with cilantro. Very few people don’t like ceviche.
