Who Are Our ESL Students?

Written by International TEFL Academy Costa Rica

Who is learning English as a Second Language?  There are five main categories of students that you will be working with as you teach ESL.

3 Important ESL Classroom Techniques

1 - Adult Learners

Understanding the benefits of being bilingual, adult learners make great students!  They are motivated and invested in the classes, and they want to learn from you.  Most of these classes will be in the evenings and on Saturdays.

2 - Employees at Businesses

Many international companies invest in their employees by paying for their English classes.  Expectations are high for both the employer and the employees in the classes, and everything you do in class is practical for these learners.  Classes will be early in the morning, during lunch or after the workday is through.

3 - Kids

Planning for these classes is a bit different, but working with young children and teens is lots of fun!  Generally these classes are organized by age and English level, and most of these classes are on Saturdays.

4 - Private Students

Some students have difficulties fitting a regular class into their schedule, while others are just not comfortable in a group setting.  Private classes are built specifically on one student's needs, interests and wants and are enjoyable for both the teacher and the learner.

5 - Online Students

A growing trend in the ESL world is online classes. There are many companies and platforms to work with, but it's a great option for ESL teachers because it allows you to work regardless of where in the world you are!
